The two sporting heroes will focus on Vodafone’s Charitable Foundation investment of over £12 million into its new Sport and Music Programme over the next three years. With Tanni and Matthew’s experience, determination and success in the sporting arena, they will work closely with the Foundation to harness investment into sporting projects which create positive change for disadvantaged young people and their communities.
Over the last five years, The Vodafone Group Foundation has invested over £101 million in social investments around the world and is keen to build on the success it has achieved in exciting new sport and music initiatives. From 2007 to 2010 the new programme will make funds available for both sport and music initiatives which have positive effects on health, education and alleviating poverty.
Commenting on their appointments, Lord MacLaurin, Chairman of the Vodafone Group Foundation said: “Sport and music have been shown to create a positive impact on disadvantaged young people. The Foundation is committed to funding projects that create a strong force for change – something we know both Tanni and Matthew will take to heart and help us with. We are delighted to have their support in developing our new programme.”
Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE commented: “Sport and music are international languages that, not only transcend boundaries, but also have a positive impact on a number of problems such as poor health, crime and social exclusion. We need to galvanise the benefits of sport quickly and make real change to the communities that most need it.”
Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE, commented: “Sport gives so much more to people than just the pleasure and satisfaction that comes from simply taking part. There’s discipline, competition, fitness and finally the chance to win, All these attributes, in their own way, provide young people with important life skills. I am thrilled to be advising The Vodafone Group Foundation as it begins its programme to enable charities to further sporting programmes across the globe.”
The Vodafone Group Foundation is seeking partners for the proposed programme of activity in both sport and music. Expressions of interest must be received by Wednesday 15 August 2007. Interested organisations should go to www.vodafonefoundation.org.
