DB Sundara Ramam, executive-in-charge, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD),Tata Steel, and Rajesh Patel, chief, mining, SCM of Tata Steel, received the award from Piyush Goyal, Minister for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, Government of India, on October 3, 2016, at the 50th annual general meeting of FIMI in New Delhi. Mr Patel was also awarded the certificate of excellence for the outstanding performance of the mine.
The award was given after rigorous analysis of the performance of the mine followed by site-assessment by experts on aspects of operational excellence like environmental best practices, corporate social responsibility, finance and human resource management, scientific mining, biodiversity conservation, etc. On the basis of it the jury committee for FIMI Awards 2015-16 has selected the winners. FIMI gives nine such awards annually in four categories ie overall excellence, environment, health and safety and social awareness.
Expressing his happiness on SCM being conferred with the honour, Mr Ramam said, “As a responsible corporate we will continue to pursue excellence while mining responsibly, adopt the best practices of the industry and promote inclusive growth around our operations.”
Being the first mine in the country to roll out the Sustainable Development Framework in January 2016, a concept proposed and promoted by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, for the development of culture of sustainable mining in the country, SCM had set the standards for best practices. It was also honoured with CII ITC Sustainability Award 2015 for excellence in corporate social responsibility.
