At the end of the financial closing, the consortium will build and operate a coal-fired cogeneration plant with a generation capacity of 415 MW and a production capacity of 587 MW steam. The plant will be equipped with three fluidized bed boilers incorporating effective pollution control measures to significantly reduce particulate emissions.
The entire production will be purchased by the Government of Mongolia as part of a 25-year power purchase agreement. The steam produced will be used to Ulaanbaatar district heating.
The new plant will meet the growing demand for energy in Mongolia, largely related to the expansion of the mining sector and the abundant supply of natural resources, which are combined with a growing population.
The consortium consists of GDF SUEZ (30%), Sojitz Corp. (30%), POSCO ENERGY (30%) and Newcom LLC (10%).
