The Lufthansa staff moved into the LAC, an ultra-modern office building, in July 2006. It requires, thanks to an innovative structure consisting of thermally-active fair-faced concrete ceilings, a sensitive shade automation system and a highly insulated facade, only about one-third of the heating energy of a conventional office building. As a result, the heating energy consumption of the LAC is 56 percent below the specifications of the currently valid Energy Saving Ordinance. With respect to electricity consumption it is 17 percent less. Thanks to the building’s low energy concept, Lufthansa relieves the Rhine-Main region of around 12,000 tons of CO2 each year.
In its key points, the Group’s strategic environmental programme requires that in planning, construction and redevelopment of buildings within the Lufthansa Group, the latest energy-saving and sustainable aspects are taken into account. Further examples of sustainable construction and operation in the Group are the Lufthansa Training & Conference Center in Seeheim, which is supplied with energy by a geothermal energy system from deep underground, as well as the new building satellite currently under construction at Munich Airport. It is designed according to the principles of sustainable construction, as a result of which its carbon footprint is 40 percent better than that of the two existing terminals.
The planned construction of the new logistics centre “LCCneo” of Lufthansa Cargo at Frankfurt Airport will be completed in such a way that it satisfies the high requirements of the Gold Standard of the DGNB – Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen (German Association for Sustainable Construction). The extensive certification covers the six theme areas of ecology, economy, socio-cultural and functional aspects, technology, processes and location. Thanks to its modern technical infrastructure and automated warehouse logistics, the new cargo hub will make faster throughput times with considerably reduced unit costs possible and at the same time noticeably improve the service quality for Lufthansa Cargo’s customers.
