Amsterdam, Netherlands – The operators of BGDO.com have issued an urgent public statement accusing domain industry giants GoDaddy.com, Afternic, and Dan.com of engaging in what is being described as an orchestrated and predatory seizure of the high-value domain name BGDO.com, causing damages estimated at €10 million (approximately $10 million USD).
The domain, which had been under a lease-to-own contract with GoDaddy/Afternic since 2023, was forcefully removed from the customer’s account in late June 2025, after a single payment failed due to a temporary billing issue. This occurred despite two years of uninterrupted payments totaling $3,000, and with no legal notice, no grace period, and no opportunity to cure the default.
The domain BGDO.com was actively in use for a major technology venture and served as a foundational asset for branding, digital identity, and global communications.
Press Statement from the Injured Party
“What happened was not a contractual enforcement, it was an illicit asset seizure under the guise of policy,” said a representative of the injured party. “GoDaddy, Afternic, and Dan.com operated in coordination to repossess and recycle our domain into their own resale ecosystem, stripping our company of a premium domain after two years of full compliance, over a mere 8-day billing delay.”
“This would never happen with real estate, intellectual property, or leased physical equipment. But in the digital domain space, the rules are entirely unregulated, enabling a mafia-style operation to profit from forfeitures while retaining all prior payments. It’s professional theft disguised as a policy loophole.”
Chronology of Events
- 2023–2025: BGDO.com was leased via GoDaddy’s platform under a monthly payment plan
- June 24, 2025: A payment failed due to a brief card issue while the registrant was traveling
- By July 2, 2025: The domain was removed from the GoDaddy account without prior notice
- Afternic (owned by GoDaddy) listed the domain again, effectively reclaiming it
- Dan.com (also owned by GoDaddy Group) was identified in back-end communications related to resale
- All prior payments were forfeited, and no refund, recovery, or recourse was offered
Damages and Legal Position
The injured party asserts that the total losses from the domain confiscation exceed $10,000,000 USD, including:
- €3,000 in direct lease payments
- €200,000+ in branding, development, infrastructure, and SEO investment
- Breach of contracts, client trust, and active campaigns tied to BGDO.com
- Collapse of global email communications linked to the domain
- Terminated investor negotiations and lost revenue streams
- Rebuilding costs for rebranding, legal filings, and technical migration
A formal legal notice has been prepared and international litigation is being considered.
The injured party is calling upon consumer protection agencies, regulatory authorities, digital rights organizations, and the media to investigate and address the abusive practices in the domain leasing industry, especially when companies like GoDaddy control both the leasing infrastructure and resale marketplaces (Afternic, Dan.com).
Call for Industry Reform
The injured party is also launching a public campaign calling for:
- Mandatory grace periods for domain lease defaults
- Transparent contract disclosures and legal notices
- Clear rules on equity accumulation in long-term leases
- Protections against conflict of interest where the registrar is also the reseller
- Oversight of digital asset seizure practices by registrars and marketplaces
