This decision was taken in the context of the ‘EU Children of Peace’ Initiative. As the laureate of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize, the EU agreed to dedicate the prize money (almost €1 Million) to humanitarian projects assisting children affected by conflict, in the field of education. The European Commission provided matching funds and, in late 2012, adopted a first financial decision for €1 Million. The funds were allocated to four humanitarian projects that are currently reaching out to 28 000 conflict-affected children worldwide. The new decision shall continue and expand the initiative to reach even more children worldwide in need of emergency education.
