BP’s operations in the Chicago area placed seventh overall in the large company category of the Tribune’s annual ranking, while BP’s U.S. headquarters in Houston placed ninth overall in the same group in the Chronicle survey.
Employees gave BP high marks for a competitive benefit package with industry-leading pay and bonuses tied to performance. The company was also recognized by employees for extensive training, continuing education and career development opportunities including international assignments.
In addition to the top ten ranking, BP’s Chicago operations also received a special work/life flexibility award for its flexible scheduling and work-from-home arrangements.

With more than 10,000 BP employees and contractors, the Houston area is home to the single largest concentration of BP’s U.S. employees anywhere in the world. The Chicagoland area is BP’s next biggest U.S. hub, with more than 2,500 employees.
The Top Workplaces surveys in each newspaper are determined based solely on employee feedback. The employee survey is conducted by WorkplaceDynamics, LLP, a leading research firm on organizational health and employee engagement. WorkplaceDynamics conducts regional Top Workplaces programs with 37 major publishing partners and recognizes a list of 150 National Top Workplaces. Over the past year, more than 5,000 organizations and 1 in every 88 employees in the U.S. have turned to WorkplaceDynamics to better understand what’s on the minds of their employees. The Chicago Tribune published the complete list of Top Workplaces on Nov. 12, while the Houston Chronicle published its list on Nov. 10.
In addition to the Top Workplace recognition, BP America’s Internship and Co-op Program was recently ranked number one in the Best Overall Internship category in a survey published by Forbes Magazine. In the survey, compiled by Vault Career Intelligence, former interns scored BP a 9.6 out of 10 when asked about a series of topics including quality of life, compensation & benefits, interview process, career development and full-time employment prospects.
BP hosts about 300 interns annually at more than 20 locations across the US and offers full-time employment positions to more than 50 percent of those who participate in the program.
