  • Netherlands
  • In the newly released 2016/2017 QS World University Rankings, the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is ranked 57th, once again making it the highest placed Dutch university. The new rankings were released on Tuesday, 6 September. Since QS started publishing its rankings separately from Times Higher Education in 2010, the UvA has consistently been the highest ranked Dutch university. Last year, the UvA was ranked 55th overall. Just as in previous years, the highest ranked university is Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Methodology

The QS World University Rankings are compiled based on six criteria: Academic Reputation (weighted 40%), Citations per Faculty (the number of citations, 20%), Faculty Student (the student-staff ratio, 20%), Employer Reputation (reputation among employers, 10%), International Faculty (the proportion of international staff, 5%) and International Students (the proportion of international students, 5%).

About rankings

The UvA is continually striving to strengthen and improve its teaching and research. A high ranking isn’t an aim in itself, but can be the result of better teaching and research. A good position in large international rankings is important on the international stage because many international researchers and students firstly use rankings to gauge the quality of the university where they would like to work or study.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject, in which the various disciplines are assessed, will be released in the spring of 2017.
