Young Europeans lack job skills, US consultancy says

In its study, "Education to Employment," published on Monday (13 January), McKinsey said one in three firms feel that a lack of skills among Europe's youth posed major business problems, in the form of cost, quality, or time. Meanwhile, 27 percent reported that they had left a vacancy unfilled over the past 12 months because they could not find anyone with the right skills. The report comes just weeks before the European Central Bank will begin its 'stress tests' of Europe's banks in early 2014 to assess how robust their capital positions are. Credit ratings dictate how easily a bank can borrow on the financial markets. Member states agree reforms on foreign worker rules

"We have finally reached agreement," said Lithuania's employment minister Algimanta Pabedinskiene, who chaired the ministers' meeting. "It will help to protect the rights of the posted workers and will prevent possible abuses and infringements," she said Monday (9 December). The deal means member states now have a mandate to enter negotiations with the European parliament on the revised draft of the 1996 posted workers directive.
