Fighting ciguatoxin food poisoning – European scientists join forces


Ciguatoxin is found in fish that feed on a microorganism that produces the toxic substance. Consumers eating affected fish can suffer from a range of symptoms including gastrointestinal and neurological effects. Since 2008, Spain and Portugal have reported outbreaks of ciguatoxin food poisoning in the Canary Islands and Madeira. Tackling overfishing Overfishing continues to pose a threat to fish stocks throughout the world. In Europe the situation in the Mediterranean is proving problematic. In 2013 424,993 tonnes of fish were caught and 96% of bottom-living fish and 71% of middle-water stocks such as sardine and anchovy are currently overfished.
