Airbnb drops controversial payment card in France

card.000

The French government had asked tax authorities to look into the system, suspected of facilitating tax avoidance, after it was revealed that Airbnb was allowing its hosts to use the prepaid Payoneer card. The card allows homeowners to receive payments for their rentals without money transiting through bank accounts. The decision comes as Airbnb, similar to its taxi-hailing peer Uber, is facing a growing crackdown from legislators worldwide - triggered in part by lobbying from the hotel industry, which sees the rental service as providing unf... Apple ‘to buy Shazam for $400m’

shazam (1)

Shazam, a UK company founded in 1999, allows people to use their smartphone or computer to identify and buy music through a snippet of sound. Shazam, which says it has more than 100 million monthly users, makes most of its revenue from commissions paid on referrals to Apple's iTunes Store. Neither Apple nor Shazam have commented on the reports on the TechCrunch site. If the deal is confirmed, Shazam will become the latest in a string of UK technology firms to be bought up by larger businesses. The influential Music Business Worldwide site po... Read More »

German spy agency warns of Chinese LinkedIn espionage

link

The agency alleges that Chinese intelligence used the networking site to target at least 10,000 Germans, possibly to recruit them as informants. It released a number of fake profiles allegedly used for this purpose. BfV head Hans-Georg Maassen said the accounts show China's efforts to subvert top-level German politics. "This is a broad-based attempt to infiltrate in particular parliaments, ministries and government agencies," he said. China has denied similar allegations of cyber espionage in the past and has not yet responded to the Germ... Read More »

The four companies that shape our lives

four (1)

The four most important tech companies aren’t even just tech companies anymore. They each have embedded themselves in our lives, hugely influencing us by playing to our basic human instincts: from the eternal human search for answers to our need for love. That’s what Scott Galloway, professor of marketing at New York University, argues in his new book, The Four: The Hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. He also says that the companies’ deep pockets and massive customer base are what allow the companies to start competing in d... Read More »

google

It focuses on allegations that Google unlawfully harvested information from 5.4 million UK users by bypassing privacy settings on their iPhones. Bitcoin crosses $10,000 milestone

bitcoin-660

The virtual currency reached the benchmark for the first time, just days after it passed $9,000. It caps a remarkable rise in value for the crypto-currency, which was trading below $1,000 at the start of the year. Some experts believe the asset still has far to soar, but others say it represents a speculative bubble with nothing tangible at its core that could burst any time. The total value of all the bitcoins in existence has now surpassed $167bn. Bitcoin first reached $1,000 in late-2013 and then dipped significantly before starting a vol... Read More »

Is Apple getting sloppy?

Apple-660x300

It has been revealed that users of its new MacOS High Sierra operating system can access it without using a password. Just use "root" as a username, leave the password field blank and hit "Enter" a few times. It's an embarrassing slip-up and not one users are used to from Apple, whose products are often cited as more reliable and secure than its rivals'. But the "root" password bug is not as isolated a case as it might at first seem. Last month, Apple had to release a patch for another password-related issue in High Sierra. Some ... Read More »
